Certainly the most valuable pearl in the natural heritage of the national park Sutjeska is a strictly protected reserve Perućica, one of the few preserved European rainforests. As early as 1938, foresters of taxis during the preparation of the device study on the mountain Maglić found in the Peričica river basin in the cove between Maglić, Volujak and Sniježnica, the beautiful beech, fir and smoked stands of 1000 m3 per hectare and height individual trees reached over 50 m. Forest stands Perućice did not have a bow in the Dinarides, not only in terms of wood and height, but also by composition, appearance and beauty. All this was the reason for the Government of the SR BiH to allocate the area of Perucica with a surface area of 1234 ha “from regular forest management, as a forestry facility needed for scientific research and teaching” in 1952. In 1954, this area, increased by another 200 ha, is placed under the protection of the state as a natural reserve “, by the decision of the National Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and Natural Rarities of BiH.
View from Vidikovac (Dragoš Sedlo) to Perućica and the Skakavac waterfall, which in the heart of the rainforest rises from a height of over 70 m, fills the man with the pleasure that this small part of the primordial nature, with rich multifunctional biodiversity, has been preserved for present and future generations. Preservation and protection of Perućica in the original state is one of the main tasks of the National Park Sutjeska. In the reserve, everything is left to nature. Birth, life, dying and rebirth, this eternal life cycle, takes place without the intervention of man. The remains of naturally deceased trees are growing new life. Perućica today presents such a rare, natural laboratory with great significance for many scientific disciplines, for education, as well as for simple enjoyment in clean and untouched nature.
